♥ personal updates ~ dandruff problems ♥

Monday, July 27, 2009

Hi everyone, how's the SONA going? I'll just reserve my comments for a while. For 4 days, we had a visitor from Australia (a Pinay and her son) who had lived there for 13 years. The duo is so cool, inspiring and eye-pleasing. It was fun having them. And, yesterday was a big day for me! I was confirmed by Archbishop John Dew. Yep, shame at this age but was made extraordinary by the place and time. Archbishop even gave us something from Rome, Italy as remembrance.

Quite a lot had happened this weekend, oh yeah, but I still need some "inspirin" to blog! Been feeling a little lonely, homeysicky these past days.... *sniff*

Change topic fellas!

For three months, I've been battling with "dandruff"! yikes! I know what you're thinking, it's yuck and so unglam, unfab, unlady of me. Embarassingly sad but it's true!

Before you all think that I was absent when Personal Grooming 101 was being taught, my dandruff is due to climatic change. Back in RP, I only get this when super stress-out with stuff. Now, I'm having this because of the cold, very cold weather.

So what do I do?

The first option one may think of, including me is to take an anti-dandruff shampoo. But I reconsider the facts that (1) anti-dandruff shampoos are normally harsher & could lead to more dryness; (2) the reason of me having dandruff is because of scalp dryness due to COLD weather and; (3) there is only one reasonably-priced anti-dandruff shampoo here and it dries my scalp all the more.

So I looked for alternative solutions and found the following helpful tips:

1. Good blood circulation up to our scalp is very important. That way, no toxic will build-up in our scalps. To achieve that, do "scalp massage" at least once a week before washing your hair.

2. Try applying (Virgin) Coconut Oil but since the price ain't practical here in my local, I stopped but hey, it was effective (lucky Filipinos).

3. Cider Vinegar added to a basin of water as a final rinse to the hair, to maintain its acid balance. Do it on a weekend! =)

4. Mix one egg yolk with a squirt of lime juice and a few drops of camphor oil and apply to scalp for 10 minutes, then rinse with warm water. This will reintroduce missing protein to the scalp.

Gotta try myself numbers 3 & 4 this coming weekend. Wish me luck!=) Though the scalp massage has already helped a lot!

Do you have other tips?, you're welcome to share it!

All love ,
Miss Sachi

♥ BEERy Healthy ♥

Friday, July 24, 2009

Happy Hour folks! Wait. Stop. Before the next “round” you may want to read first some inspirations. Ready or not, it’s below:

BENEFITS OF BEER

v Prevents Cancer Most beers contain Xanthohumol, a prenylflavonoid which is good because it has shown to have potential promise in preventing prostate cancer and prostate enlargement.

v Supplements Vitamins - Beer is prepared from grains, water and yeast. It provides modest Vitamin B, plus more useful quantities of magnesium, selenium and other trace elements. Beer is identified in the blood through the level of vitamin B6 present in such blood and Vit B has shown to decrease the level of homocysteine which on the other hand increase the chances of heart disease.

.

v Reduces chances of heart disease - Studies show that one drink a day for women or up to two drinks a day for men reduces your chances of strokes, heart and vascular disease.

v X-rays radioprotection - Japanese researchers found that beer helps reduce chromosomal damage from radiation exposure. Samples were exposed to X-rays and other types of radiation after the subjects drank the beer, their samples showed at least 30% fewer aberrations in the blood cells.

v Boosts Memory - Research showed that moderate consumption of alcohol can improve your memory. Though the research is quite unclear, it is noted that the increased production of new nerve cells during moderate alcohol consumption can be important for the development of alcohol addiction and other long-term effects of alcohol on the brain.

v Slow down the aging process – There are studies which suggest that beer is an anti-inflammatory and can slow the aging process.

v Beer vs. wine and Beer vs. Jogging - Beer contains a similar amount of polyphenols as red wine and 4-5 times as many polyphenols as white wine. Beer is more nutritious than wine. Unfiltered beer contains nearly all the B vitamins, several minerals, and as many antioxidants as wine. Beer provides a 30% increase in vitamin B6 into the blood plasma - something that neither wine nor any other liquor can do. Beer is also a rich source of dietary silicon, a mineral that improves bone density.

Moderate beer drinking (1-2 for females, 2-3 for males) seems to increase the body’s hi-density lipo-protein (HDL), which is the type of cholesterol that reduces heart disease risk. This is also what happens when someone exercises like jogging.

More, more, more:

Three easy Visual Signs of EXCELLENT BEER:

1. There are small bubbles that continue to rise for several minutes.

2. There is a densed head, 1 ½ - 2 inches high that lasts.

3. There ain’t any trace of cloudiness.

Now, inspired by these facts and becoming more meticulous in your beer? That’s good. Let me just remind you that these benefits apply only to MODERATE DRINKING, doing it the other way is HARMFUL to your well-being. I myself admit, I ask for beer more than any other alcohol drinks, wine included. I trust you fellas. Be responsible drinkers and feel guilt-free while getting or ordering another cold glass of beer & drink it bottom’s up!

CHEERS!

♥ Election Watch 7/'09 ♥

Thursday, July 23, 2009

Ten short months to go, MAY 2010 election (including the presidential candidates) is just around the corner. Knowing and seeing so much of Philippines’ politics, a fairly refutable prediction can be given, i.e. as of now there are already lots of candidates who are rooting and splurging big bickies for political campaign ads and all other election ruckus.

Election in my country is almost like a “feast”, very alive and colorful. As to fairness, honesty or filthiness, let’s spare each other from commenting on these.

So far, the latest SWS survey (click here for full report) shows the following results as of June 2009.

1. Manny Villar 33%
2. Joseph Estrada* 25%
3. Francis Escudero 20%
4. Mar Roxas 20%
5. Noli De Castro 19%
6. Loren Legarda 15%
7. Panfilo Lacson 07%

Ten months to go and still counting, but never too early for voters to study carefully who are the “least evil” candidates. Another election. Another chance. Let’s not loose our hopes. It’s absolutely our choice not to keep it high but please do not loose it; it may be the last strand people could hold onto.

*as per Philippine 1987 Constitution: No president can be re-elected and Estrada having received a "presidential pardon", no possible way he can be a candidate.

All hopes ,

♥ Danger in Herbal Teas ♥

Herbal Teas
Drinking tea is healthy and one great way to detoxify our bodies and inner systems as well from all the radicals all over and above us! Personally, it is one of my favorite chillax drinks. I have absolutely no doubt when it comes to its benefits, aside from the the slight dehydrating effect and bitter after-taste sometimes. But tea products have undergone such a remarkable development.

As careful as I always am, some herbal teas may counter effects of some RX drugs or cause some serious side effects.

  • severe diarrhea: senna (leaves, flowers & barks), buckthorn bark, dock roots and aloe leaves
  • allergic reactions: camomile, golden-rod, marigold & yarrow
  • cancer: sassafras
  • toxic / fatal: shave grass, Indian tobacco and mistletoe leaves
  • hallucinations: catnip, juniper, hydrangea, jimsonweed, lobelia, nutmeg & wormwood

You might want to stop drinking tea when taking meds or seek an advise before having one on your Sunday afternoon or just tell your doc what tea you are currently drinking along with his RX. For health, beauty and safety, might as well keep in mind these dont's when it comes to drinking herbal teas!

Cheers everyone! =)

Betty Boop

Tuesday, July 21, 2009

Before I call it a day, I just wanna share a gift from my special friend which I really appreciated since I thought, items like these are already extinct...

*super old films, older than me!*

I love Betty Boop since childhood to mid-teens. All my notebooks, she is the cover! But I had no idea what her life story was until this gift was given to me. I am just so happy so, cheers to all!

New home’s bargains

Living abroad for me equates independence, freedom, self-tests, soul-search, endurance and opportunities, but never easy especially financially. I had a huge change of lifestyle. (needs a separate post!) I was never much into all expensive items, hey I'm a Tondo girl - a proud one I must say. Divisoria is one jeepney ride away. As a matter of truth all my jackets for winter that I use now were from either DIVI or Ukay at HP, Taft and Baguio. Remind me to post how'd I make some wonders with my finds!

Today, I had to go downtown for a prior commitment even if the weather isn’t too friendly. To maximize my day & my day-tripper pass, I decided to include other places on my itinerary.

My first stop was at my meeting then I went to the nearest ATM machine. Next was to buy some staples for our pantry, not to forget my new favorite “Nutella” and other reduced baked products. Yep, they reduce prices significantly of breads and cakes which will expire in a couple of days. I then looked for the famous 2$ shop. Well, well, well, I’ve been keeping my belt too tight these past few days and a couple of 2 bucks to pamper myself aint bad. I bought few scrappLannering ( i love scarpbooks and planners so i combined them!) materials. That made my day. I could start my big dream board, finally. Though raining, I stuck to my plan and went straight to a second-hand store. I was surprised! There were lots of cheap but still nice second-hand goods to buy. The shop is called Salvation Army (a charitable UKAY). Too bad, the item I needed was out-of-stock. I just bought a good basketware and some folders & papers. Yep, I bought a bunch of paper for scratch, paper conservation that is! Interestingly, I just walked to get into these places!

My hoards

*Betty Boop stickers, pencils, pattern papers*

*basketware, i grabbed at almost 80% off the orig price*

Tired? Definitely, I couldn't count the bus stops I saw while walking.

Happy? Absolutely Yes! It’s just so nice to explore an unknown (yet safe) territory and taking home some good finds that won't hurt my pocket or slash my budget that much.

How to Prevent Burglary

A couple of days ago, I read a news about the burglar incident to Anne Curtis' (actress/model/style icon) house which I think, if not mistaken is somewhere in the South. see related story in this LINK.

Incidents like these are scary and truly saddening. Such misfortune and alarming incident may happen to anyone, YOU, me or any member of my circa. So, just to help everyone out, especially those without security personnel at home, here are some tips for the prevention of these dangerous events - BURGLARY. I hope you find one or two of these tips helpful without being into any unsafe situation.

  • Must make sure that all possible entries like doors & windows are well-secured.
  • If possible, do away with the shrubs or any other possible hiding spots.
  • Ready your key when you arrive at home.
  • Carefully & thoroughly instruct family members and other house members about security precautions and procedures.
  • Reroute subscriptions (magazines, newspapers, mail) when going away for a long vacation and no one or just few house members are left at home.
  • Try to engrave a distinct mark on your expensive thing that can be removed from the house.
  • Do not inform everybody when going away for a long vacay & no one or just few are left at home.
  • Do not put expensive items in a very public visible spots.
  • Do not leave a key outside the house (under pots or rags).
  • Do not give a hint that you are away or no one is in the house.
  • Keep ladders inside.
  • Keep your car lights on until you opened the garage.
If all safety measures are properly done and it still happens and you are at home, please do not risk your or anyone's life. Try to hide in a safe place. Try to preserve the scenes and call police assistance at the first safe opportunity. After all, most of what they will take away are items that can be replaced.

Sachi: Stay safe everyone! Cheers! =)

Vitamins, anyone?

Friday, July 17, 2009

All About V-itamins!
In today's modern world, it is almost inevitable to take Vitamins. It has become an integral part of our lives in order to live by with pollution and stresses. So, Vitamins are added to our daily diet. Anyone can buy it in over-the-counter and in brochures! But wait, since it has now become very important, don't you think it might also be necessary to take extra cautious before we take them all into our system?
  • Vitamin A such as those in carrots and broccoli may reduce the risk of cancer, especially lung cancer. Hgh dietary intake of carotene (a compound converted into Vit A by the body) reduces cancer risk, even among long-term smokers. Other popular sources are: apples, squash, tomatoes and green vegtables.
  • Vitamin C and aspirin do not fit. They are not supposed to be taken together. Combined heavy doses of these meds may produce excessive stomach irritations which could lead to ulcer.
  • One gram oof Vit B-6 can be dangerous since the body only needs 1 0r 2 milligrams of B-6 a day. Overdoses may lead to loss of sensory and motor control.
  • High doses of Vitamin E (which is good for the skin) may cause blood clots, phlebitis, hypertension, severe fatigue, breast tumors and disturbances of reproduction. It is suggested that daily intake of more than 100-300 units of active tocopherol is excessive.
  • Unlike Vit Bs & C which passed out the body through the kidneys when taken in excess, Vit A & D are stored in fat and the liver where they can cause some damage like cirrhosis, dry itchy skin, fatigue and muscle pain.
sources: New England Journal, Journal of AMA, Health Letter, USI, Northwestern Universiity, BBB

sachi's note: I myself take vitamins, why not? if it will make me feel and look better plus healthier ofcourse. But everything had to be in moderation and if possible with prescription. I'm sure with all that plus a load of useful info in your hand (as when not to take it or when is it too much) everyhting will be just great. Just take the necessary precautions before taking into your body those tablets of promises.

One more thing fellas, my doctor told me not to take Vitamin C when having a fever, since it would aggrevate my condition. =)

Cheers to good health!

The Green Part of Sachi

Thursday, July 16, 2009

It’s no loner vivid in my memory when exactly I become a nature-conscious being or how I closely become one. As a matter of truth, even now I do not consider myself a true-blooded pro-earth person yet, at least NOT YET. I think my travels around the Philippine’s finest destinations like Palawan, Bohol and Davao (I’m not certain whether to include Boracay, you know.) created me some sort of an attachment with the environment. It made me appreciate the beauty of nature in more simple, realistic and upfront manner.

Little by little, I became more interested in pro-mother earth events and topics. Subconsciously, I start to think on how to practice conservation. I started to collect e-books regarding saving the planet earth. =) what a geek!? I have a number of e-books on my laptop – talk about paper conservation there.

When I read, it became my habit to take notes of sentences, phrases or thoughts that inspire me or at least I find interesting and since I’m talking about beloved mother earth, here are few of my fave notes from various e-books, some of which I already do, some I’m still trying to live out and some I’m not proud guilty of. =)

1) USE YOUR SPELL CHECKER. Before you hit print (especially the icon in the toolbar), be sure to run grammar and spell check. Once you get it error-free, preview it (file print preview) to ensure it fits well on the page and looks the way you want it to. You'll reduce the amount of paper you use, saving money and helping the environment!

2) USE BOTH SIDES OF YOUR PAPER. Cut into fourths or halves any one-sided print documents you can no longer use and stack them next to your computer and telephone (you can put a little personal style into them, like names or logos). They make the perfect size for quick notes. Or, if you do a lot of printing from your computer that is only for your use, use the second side of obsolete or imperfect documents. It doesn't matter that there's something on the other side.

3) USE RECHARGEABLE BATTERIES. Batteries contain heavy metals such as mercury and cadmium, which have become a major source of contamination in dumpsites. They break apart and are released into the soil or are incinerated and the deadly heavy metals are released into the air. Use batteries that are rechargeable. They will save you 10 or 20 times the original cost (by not buying batteries over and over again). You can also prolong the life of any battery by using the AC adapter for radios and other appliances. And try to dispose them properly, though sadly, in our country it’s quite hard to do so.

4) DON'T RELEASE HELIUM BALLOONS OUTSIDE. It may appear to be a beautiful experience but releasing balloons into the air is dangerous. The balloons can cause suffocation or starvation in animals by blocking stomach or air valves. Metallic balloons can cause power outrages when they get caught in power lines.

5) BUY ORGANICALLY-GROWN FOOD. More and more grocery stores are offering organically grown products or have organic sections in their stores. Organically grown foods are foods that were grown without using chemical fertilizer, pesticides or herbicides. They're better for you and the earth because no chemicals are getting into you, the soil or water.

6) IF YOU HAVE A LEAKY FAUCET, CATCH THE DRIPS UNTIL YOU GET IT FIXED. One drop of water per second can waste 2,300 gallons of water per year. Put a pan, bowl or cup under it to catch the water. Use the water for cooking, drinking, or watering a plant. Judge the size of your container - a leaky faucet can fill a coffee cup in 10 minutes.

7) CAN'T AFFORD A WATER-SAVING TOILET? This is something we've been doing for years -- put a bleach bottle inside the tank. First fill the bleach bottle with water, cap it tightly and put it in the tank after you flush it. The average toilet uses 3-7 gallons of water per flush. The bottle will displace from ½ - 1 gallon of water and save you money with every flush. You can also use a brick, but put it in a plastic bag as it may deteriorate.

8) GO AHEAD AND BUY THAT NEW TV. Modern televisions consume less than half the electricity of older models. This is the upside of some new technology! And this should really be this way…. Speaking of TVs. Always use your television's on/off switch. Don't leave it on standby as this wastes energy.

9) DON'T OVER-DRY YOUR CLOTHES. You’ll avoid wrinkles (and possibly the need to iron).

10) USE ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY CLEANERS INSTEAD OF CHEMICALS. Here are a few: Window Cleaner: mix ½ cup white vinegar in one quart warm water. Silver Cleaner: put 1 teaspoon salt and 1 teaspoon baking soda in 2-3 inches of boiling water in an aluminum foil-lined pan. Add silver and boil three more minutes. Oven Cleaner: mix 1 part vinegar to 4 parts water in a spray bottle. Spray onto cool oven surface and scrub the oven clean. Use baking soda on stubborn spots. All-Purpose Bathroom & Kitchen Cleaner: dissolve 2 tablespoons baking soda in 1 pint warm water. Add lemon juice or vinegar to cut grease.

11) KILL ROACHES NATURALLY. Keep a spray bottle of soapy water on hand. Spraying roaches directly with soapy water will kill them.

12) CHANGE YOUR HABITS IN THE KITCHEN. Cover saucepans with lids whenever possible to reduce cooking time. Use a tea kettle instead of a pan to heat water (measure the amount of water you need) and heat only that amount of water.

Finally, to put a personal addition to the above items, my latest catch from my dear cousin -- use organic beauty products!

Twelve items plus one bonus equal a small step that could go a long way (if we start NOW) in nursing our very ill living planet. That’s a small share or price to pay for living on her.

Cheers for mother nature!

Osteoporosis vs. Alzheimers

Do you know that, too much CALCIUM may result to memory impairment?

CALCIUM is involved in the transmission of messages along brain neurons in the portion of the brain thought to direct memory functions. It is possible that as we age Calcium flow into nerve cells increases, impairing the flow of messages. Possible implications: calcium-blocking drugs might be used to prevent memory loss, then too much calcium supplements may contribute to memory loss.

source: Landfield Philip, MD; BBB

sachi's note: "Take Calcium supplement under prescription if possible, or take extra cautious in taking just any other supplement. Read carefully the labels and try to know all the info. just to be safe. =) Anyway, we're taking these meds to be healthier, ayt? not to gain another/future medical prob!"

MJ tribute?

sad Monday

Monday, July 6, 2009

It's a sad Monday - cherry text me a very sad news - our dear "tita", Ian's (another RECK from college days) mother passed away. It was an untimely death in our opinion but who are we to know, may her soul be at peace with the Lord our God.

Tita, wherever you are in Heaven, I want to say some things to you...
I wanna thank you deeply for all the mem'ries we shared,
for the advises and treating us like your own children...
for cleaning me up and my mess the first time I got so drank
in your house...
for listening to the stories of my life, especially Lovelife...
for being so cool, accomodating and generous.
I will miss your maki...
Tita I'm sorry for not being able to maintain our once close
relationship. I'm really sorry for not keeping in touch.
It's a shame but I admit it anyway.
Lastly, my singing this week will be for you.
My prayers are with you and your beloved IAN for always.
May you rest in peace in God's loving arms.
I will not see you again, I cannot even attend to your funeral,
but you'll be in my heart.
I LOVE YOU tita...

"transformers indeed"

Wednesday, July 1, 2009

Today we watched “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” to support a Pinoy fundraising event.
I admit I did not, was not able perhaps, to watch the first Transformer movie simply because
I’m not a big fun of such films. Anyway, I find “Transformer: Revenge of the Fallen” as a very
nice flick, though parental guidance is definitely necessary for minors.

I just find it interesting that Optimus Prime (the heroic robot from the good side Autobots) cared so much not just for the human race but to planet Earth as well, why the hell we humans couldn’t care less? =) If a robot or a transformer lives strongly by the principle “not to destroy a planet with living things”, shouldn’t we as inhabitants and members of the “living organisms” commit to it much more?

Oh well, just the inner, natural earth-loving attitude of mine tapped by the transformers. =)

As The Deer

We sang at church the song “As a Deer” during the Holy Communion. Our dear Kathy told us it was her request song for her funeral, we found it creepy but I guess I’ll be requesting for the same song. I JUST SO LOVE IT!

The lyrics go like these…. (I kinda heard it already in the Philippines)

As The Deer

As the deer panteth for the waterSo my soul longeth after youYou alone are my heart's desireAnd I long to worship you
You're my friend and you are my brotherEven though you are a kingAnd I love you more than any otherSo much more than anything
You alone are my strength, my shieldTo you alone may my spirit yieldYou alone are my heart's desireAnd I long to worship you

Also, my name was called for prayer during the end of the mass (regarding my confirmation and it appeared on the Sunday newsletter! =) Quite extraordinary nowadays for me, the last time I saw my name printed was in HS. =) Just like what my dear bfriend Ervin said, “Gone are the days that we write”. Just felt soo good, it jogged me down the memory lane & who knows open a door for a new way. =)

excerpts from The Dominion Post

Among M.J.’s songs “Man in the Mirror” is my personal favorite:

"Man In The Mirror"

I'm Gonna Make A Change,
For Once In My Life
It's Gonna Feel Real Good,
Gonna Make A Difference
Gonna Make It Right . . .

As I, Turn Up The Collar On My
Favourite Winter Coat
This Wind Is Blowin' My Mind
I See The Kids In The Street,
With Not Enough To Eat
Who Am I, To Be Blind?
Pretending Not To See
Their Needs
A Summer's Disregard,
A Broken Bottle Top
And A One Man's Soul
They Follow Each Other On
The Wind Ya' Know
'Cause They Got Nowhere
To Go
That's Why I Want You To
Know

I'm Starting With The Man In
The Mirror
I'm Asking Him To Change
His Ways
And No Message Could Have
Been Any Clearer
If You Wanna Make The World
A Better Place
(If You Wanna Make The
World A Better Place)
Take A Look At Yourself, And
Then Make A Change
(Take A Look At Yourself, And
Then Make A Change)
(Na Na Na, Na Na Na, Na Na,
Na Nah)

I've Been A Victim Of A Selfish
Kind Of Love
It's Time That I Realize
That There Are Some With No
Home, Not A Nickel To Loan
Could It Be Really Me,
Pretending That They're Not
Alone?

A Willow Deeply Scarred,
Somebody's Broken Heart
And A Washed-Out Dream
(Washed-Out Dream)
They Follow The Pattern Of
The Wind, Ya' See
Cause They Got No Place
To Be
That's Why I'm Starting With
Me
(Starting With Me!)

I'm Starting With The Man In
The Mirror
(Ooh!)
I'm Asking Him To Change
His Ways
(Ooh!)
And No Message Could Have
Been Any Clearer
If You Wanna Make The World
A Better Place
